Another book published, another short story in an anthology.
The Monster Behind The Mask (from Static Movement Press) is now available at Amazon, or bookdepository.co.uk (especially for those in Australia, as it charges no postage fees). It is a book of hidden horrors. Of course, I have yet to read it, but my copy is on its way.
My story – ‘The Critic’ – is an odd story about a guy writing a story while his friend criticises it, not realising that what is being written is more real than he can imagine. I never thought I’d sell ‘The Critic’. The three people who read it before submission (it was written some years ago) all hated it. In fact, one reader told me it was “horseshit”. So I threw it in the pile. But it seemed a good fit for the anthology, so I dusted it off, it was accepted and… there you go.
There should be two more Static Movement books to come out with a story of mine in it (in fact, one has 2 stories of mine in it, and I am dead keen for that one!), and there is another story still pending (yet to be accepted or rejected), and then I shall move on. While it’s great to be published, they do not pay (not even a contributor’s copy), and I’ve been paid so many other places I think that they are no longer for me. I will always thank them – maybe even buy some of their titles – because they showed faith in an unknown Australian more than just once. But ‘for the love’ doesn’t cut it anymore.
